    July 1, 2013, updated July 26, 2013 (Foley book)

    Volume 9, Issue 3 Volume 9, Issue 3, mailed July 24, 2013

Volume 9, Issue 3 (Summer 2013) was mailed to all members paid for 2013, on July 24, 2013.

In this issue, the Society focuses on Richmond Virginia's "Belt Lines" which were the two RF&P/ACL's routes into the city. A big thanks goes to Old Dominion Chapter, NRHS, member Steve Tarrant for allowing us to reprint his article. Since many of our members may not be aware of the work that was involved in creating the RF&P's "Rail-O-Gram" magazine, this issue covers how each issue was constructed and issued to the railroad's employees. There is also an article about how the ACCA train office kept track of the engine crews that worked out of that office. And, last but certainly not least, the Society's modeling editor has the last word on how things are developing in the railroad modeling world.

Click on the cover image to read an in-depth overview of V9:I3's contents. This is the 33rd issue overall, and the third of four for calendar year 2013.

This issue contains a recently found article by ex-RF&P employee Robert O. Puryear titled "Story of the Virginia Central Railway" which provides more details on the shortline that connected with the RF&P in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Member and ex-RF&P employee John Frye provides us with an interesting story about snow and trains on the RF&P. There is also an article about the descriptive plaques that the city of Alexandria placed along the Potomac Yard walkway. And, last but not least, Craig Harrison, the Society's Modeling Editor, keeps us informed about the latest and greatest in RF&P modeling.

The primary membership benefit is the four issues of the newsletter for that same year, regardless of the aggregate cover price. Sustaining and Contributing dues give the additional benefit of a tax-deductible contribution of any amount greater than the Regular Dues cost. Additional members of the same household of another class of member may join as Family members for $5 per year. This class does not receive a copy of the publication, but does entitle a vote on Society business.

Renewals are also accepted by mail to the PO Box 9097, Fredericksburg VA 22403-9097 address. Any new memberships received during the tail end of 2010 will be assumed for CY2011 unless otherwise stated by applicant.

Forty-one members of the Society gathered at the Regional Library on Salem Church Road for the 3rd Quarter 2010 meeting. This was three members more than attended the 2nd quarter meeting. All told, there have been 151 different members attend at least one meeting in person, including the September 2006 PY Special event in Alexandria.

Nominations for 2011 officers and Class A directors for the 2011-2012 two year term were solicited from the membership. The current incumbent officers and directors each accepted nomination for new terms. The election ballot will be mailed out prior to the Annual meeting, to allow sufficient time for them to be returned via mail, as has been done each year since 2005. Final deadline for additional nominations is September 15, 2010.

    Website moved 7-10-09

Ideally the end user will not have noticed that the website moved today from a frame-forward to where the pages are native to the rfandp.org domain. If there are any broken links temporarily, this is likely due to the move.[Update 7-14-09: Your webmaster believes these to be resolved by this point - if you locate a broken link, please let the webmaster know]

Among the benefits of the move include email addresses that are able to send as well as receive. The old set up had the addresses as show on the site as simply email aliases that delivered the mail to the appropriate officer. In addition, we are no longer constricted by the small space quota of the old location. There are additional possibilities for future development that are under consideration, including the potential of a members-only login area.

New list for official Society announcements

There is now an announce-only list for delivery of official Society announcements, such as quarterly meeting info, company store announcements, and membership updates.

The expected traffic of this list might be at most a couple a times a month, which is significantly lower than the activity of the RFandPRR Yahoogroup. Actual mail from this address will have the following header in front of the subject: [RF&PRRHS-Member-announce].

If you furnish your email address as a part of your membership application, you will be added to this automatically. The list address is member-announce@rfandp.org. The addresses capable of posting to this list are the official @rfandp.org addresses, which are the elected and appointed officers of the Society.

RF&P Discussion List: Move to Yahoogroups completed on April 15, 2004

There is a listserv dedicated to the RF&P in all forms. To quote its mission, "This group is dedicated to the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad. Linking North and South was its slogan and its mission. The mission of this group is to link together those of us who are interested in what was once a proud railroad. Today it is gone but will forever live in the hearts of those who followed it. Feel free to post photos of the RF&P or photos of your models as well. Also, feel free to open any discussion that pertains to the RF&P as well. This includes its days as an independent railroad or today, as nothing more than a speck on the CSX map..."
